If you’ve ever shared Jesus with a non believer, you very well could have had the same experience I have had, especially online. “Jesus is a fairy tale,” they’ll say. “Jesus is a crutch,” a “genie in the sky.” And even though this happens many times, each time stings a little. They’re talking about our beloved Jesus. And for a moment you feel bad for Him until you remember He is the ruler of the universe and He can take it. He certainly took it on the way to the cross.
And He certainly knows and understands. It is all explained for us in scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:4: “Satan, who is the god of this world, has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe. They are unable to see the glorious light of the Good News. They don’t understand this message about the glory of Christ, who is the exact likeness of God.”
My song “When You Believe” is all about what happens when a person comes to know Jesus. All the mockery and cynicism is gone. The veil is lifted and they too see so clearly who this Jesus is we so love and adore. It is a beautiful and miraculous thing to see.
And at the same time, when I see Jesus working in me, working in my life, my belief becomes stronger, more firm. And when we see Him working in other’s lives, through their testimonies and changed lives, our faith is strengthened. One part of the song goes: “And I’ve seen Him in the eyes of the once defeated man, in the prayers that are answered and answered again. In the miracle of healing that no one can understand. I believe!”
So, how can we get the hardened cynical unbeliever to a place of believing and seeing? Prayer and more prayer, sharing our testimony, living our lives faithfully, with patience and love. But, ultimately it is the Holy Spirit who touches hearts and lives. We can sit in church for years and not see and believe. But, an encounter with the Holy Spirit, a need, a desire, an end to ourselves will lead us to take that step of faith. To decide we too want to believe. And then it all becomes so clear.
We often hear stories of new believers that can’t get enough of the Bible. A book they once mocked now becomes a book they can’t put down. It is such a beautiful and amazing spiritual transformation.
I wanted to write this song because I want so much for those who are blind to see. We don’t even know that we are blind. But, once we see, we understand how lost we were. Jesus we praise you!! We praise You for Your power and glory!! We believe and we see You in Your glory and Your majesty!! And I believe, if you ask, God will open your eyes. And you will see. When you believe!
